On December 2nd 2025 at Tyrol Cot Heritage Village the Division of Culture unveiled one of seven new plaques for the Barbados National Register of Historic Places. This simple blue marker is a signal that Tyrol Cot is officially recognized as part of the nation’s historic fabric and a landmark in the story of Barbados as a Republic.
The National Register, established by Cabinet in 2020, is an official list of sites, buildings and places across Barbados that are historically or culturally significant. Its purpose is to safeguard both monumental landmarks and everyday community treasures, ensuring they are researched, recognised and considered in national planning, tourism and education.
Crucially, the Register is people-centred. Communities, cultural groups and organisations can nominate the places that matter to them – from places of worship and learning to sites of resistance, creativity and public life. Listed properties benefit from national recognition, stronger protection through planning processes, and opportunities for cultural tourism and local economic growth.
We are proud that Tyrol Cot is among the first sites to be formally marked, joining locations such as the Madina Masjid, Carnegie Building and James Street Methodist Church. Together, they help tell a fuller Barbadian story – one that centres Barbadian voices, memory and identity for generations to come.
